So, the reason for that, at least as I understand it, is that people with incredibly severe depression aren't capable of doing anything at all, and as part of the medication working they start to get the ability to function back, and if you look at depression as a ladder, with the bottom being "hopeless despair" and medication as climbing up out of said pit, "suicidal despair" is above it. You go from "I wanna die but there's no use in trying" to "I wanna die and I think I have the strength to try."

Depression isn't always suicidal thoughts, sometimes it's "everything is pointless, and anything I try will fail so why try?" The problem is sometimes suicidal thoughts are between that and improvement.
