I cannot emphasize enough how much my home state has come to disappoint me in the last decade or so.

Sure, it was always a very half-right-half-left kinda place, but ever since Trump came around, it's been trying so damn hard to re-invent itself as Mississippi Lite. Like, it's not even a "real" southern red state; it's what a bored, sheltered white kid in the suburbs thinks a southern red state looks like, now. Confederate flags, 20 foot Trump shrines in yards, massive uptick in lifted Ford F250s on the road, the works. I remember when I'd walk into a grocery store or something, and the store radio would be playing whatever crappy top 10 songs were going that week. By 2016, it was nothing but honky-tonk bro-country-rock crap. Hardly a scientific metric, but a distinct shift.
