When you run out of content to do, there's no reason not to unsub and wait a few more patches for a substantial amount of post-expansion content to be released. Other MMOs like WoW tend to tie their progression to weekly activities and punish you for not being diligent and constantly subscribed; meanwhile in FFXIV gear difference is relatively minimal and the catchup mechanics are pretty generous. Shadowbringers and Endwalker are absolutely insanely good experiences and nothing I've played in the past couple years comes close except for Xenoblade 3.
