Yeah, that's puzzling. There's something to be said about the value of good narrative construction even in a big popcorn movie that doesn't have sparkling dialogue, and I think this is an underrated aspect when people judge writing. I wouldn't begrudge a screenplay nom for Avatar or Black Panther for instance. There's just nothing to Top Gun's story though.
I mean that's what really gets me right, it's not that I have contempt for good writing in popular films, it's that Top Gun has bad writing in a popular film in my opinion but it's treated as something that's worthy of being called "real cinema" when you have these same people decrying stuff like superhero movies which are just the same shit but better, and it makes me roll my eyes out of my head at the pretentiousness of it all. Top Gun's a perfectly serviceable popcorn flick with some really great action in it, but aside from the true movie magic that's found in its cinematography (again, the thing it WASN'T nominated for) it's just the same old shit as the MCU or whatever, except worse in just about every way I can imagine
