A good recent example is the Qatar world cup. Too many people (basically all non-Americans) never even considered boycotting it, because soccer is just easily more important to them than the human rights violations. For Americans it wasn't more important and many wanted to take a stand, but I think a lot of them eventually gave in to the global peer pressure.

Nah, a lot of Europe considered it just as much if not more. Most countries threatening to do anything were European. In the end, not a single country boycotted it so it was more important for everyone including Americans. While individuals from many places boycotted of course, it's ridiculous to think America was any better.
