The impression I always got is that they were the self-insert fiction that chubby friendless nerd girl Stephenie Meyer wrote in high school, just sort of scribbling in her notebook while crushing on cute boys in her class that wouldn't give her the time of day. Then she just changed the name of the main character from Stephenie to Bella when she published it. It's why literally everyone loves the main character in spite of her having almost no personality or redeeming features.
