"That liquid is too hot for that cup" It means it will probably melt. "That car is too wide for that gate" It means it could get stuck or scraped on the sides if you try to go through. When you say someone is too old for doing something, you have to say what could possibly go wrong if they still do. Will they break their hip? Will they forget something and cause a catastrophe?
