I should try X3 sometime. I think the largest criticism I heard about was it's kinda boring.
I don't find it boring at all. The boss design is very good, and the levels have tons of secrets. It takes a long time to figure out all the different paths, and the replay value is pretty insane for such a short game. Mega Man X has a few examples of stage variations based on bosses you've defeated (Chill Penguin freezes Flame Mammoth's level, Storm Eagle crashes into and damages Spark Mandrill)

X3 has that same system, but with even more effects. Defeating certain bosses will make mini-bosses in other levels not appear, or it will make certain enemies less dangerous because of a disrupted supply chain. The various weapons are pretty fun to mess around with, and a decent number of them are actually useful for niche combat situations.

Some are definitely just all flash and no substance, but they're still fun to use for flash alone.

I highly recommend X3, but it's best if you don't use a guide or walkthrough, but instead try to find everything out for yourself. The magic is kind of ruined if you know what to expect.
