I guess best described as a 2D fighter, but you can strafe around the battlefield so the maps are 3D, whereas BT is full on 3D action. At least in Japan it wasn't confusing. Budokai games were just called Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Z 2, etc, while the Budokai Tenkaichi games were called Sparking! --- Let's go, Mark Sein!
