The writers were on strike and replaced?AvClub has been on a pretty steep decline since it got merged with all the other Gawker Media sites. The switch to Kinja for the comments section just obliterated the community. All the ownership changes pissed off long-time writers. Change in article mandates morphed the site away from the kinds of articles it used to wrote and the final killing blow was when they shut down their Chicago office, where most of their best remaining writers operated out of. No option was given for remote work. If they wanted to keep their jobs they had to move to LA. This caused basically all of them to quit and a healthy chunk of the LA writers to also quit in solidarity.
