The premise is a little hokey but what's the harm of getting everyone together to celebrate your upcoming birth, even if the reason for it isn't that big a deal. I never thought I'd be asking this because I find them a little odd as well but people treat them like...I dunno...people who claim "YouTuber" as a career. I find them irritable because people (usually) tend to use them as just another reason to get gifts. If you have a baby shower, don't have a gender reveal party. No need to double dip.
