It also opens them up to lawsuits. Kiwi farms was shut down because of their anti-trans harassment and doxing which ended up in suicides a lot of the time. I knew a person that died, btw, they were very friendly and apolitical, but their real life was being harmed by it. I guess we have to harass those trans emulator developers.

Every time a website goes gung ho free speech they end up becoming gathering grounds for Nazis, then they end up getting shut down for violence or lawsuits. We can pretend that nothing we say really matters because we have the right to say whatever, but if people want to be platformed they need to not act like feral animals.

I have been a practicing attorney for 18 years. I dont think any of this applies to 261 more than it does to any discussion site anywhere on the internet.

I dont want a place where people are harassed. The vast majority of people dont. In fact, many a discussion on 261 was about how strong TOS is absolutely not a violation of free speech in any way. In fact, the post I made you partially quoted specifically says that the owner of the site makes the rules and the decisions about what is posted.

What I would like instead of having discussion of politics or any other topic of consequence banned altogether is a strong TOS that is well moderated. And, if Fandom doesnt want to do that, their choice. But lets not pretend that their actions are altruistic, or great for discussion going forward.

I absolutely dont think people have the right to say whatever on a private forum. I absolutely dont think 261 was anywhere close to a place like Kiwi Farms, or that anyone in 261 was acting like a feral animal-most of the people who did were banned. Your exaggerations make it seem like I am advocating for a toxic forum, and I am not. I am advocating for a cleaned up place to discuss politics instead of killing a board altogether for no better reason than a new corporation is now calling the shots. Because that is all this is. The politics board wasnt closed because of the kind of harassment you described. It was killed because new corporate overlords, period. That is their right, but I dont see it as something to celebrate.

I am very sorry about your friend. I am a civil rights attorney, and the kind of harassment you describe has no place anywhere. I have spent my career fighting against it. But 261 was not shut for the reasons you describe, and preemptively shutting down political discussion is not a good way to deal with these issues. It is good to have a place to discuss many of the bills that are being passed by state legislatures that are anti-trans and why those bills are unacceptable, for example. It just needs to be a well moderated forum to ensure the integrity of discussion. It is a shame we wont get that here.
