I don't think he cares, really, other than as a setting.
Everything he's done is pretty much to get Gutts' attention.

He's just a gay yandere for Gutts.
This. He was literally thinking about Guts while having sex with Charlotte. That's not subtext. That's the text.

Guts and Griffith are foils. Neither one of them fully realized how much each cared about the other until it was too late. Griffith gave that speech about how "a true friend would pursue his own ambitions in spite of what I want" not knowing that Guts would hear it and he lost his shit when it caused Guts to leave. The Band of the Hawk would have been fine without Guts at that point, but the combined blow of losing control and losing the only man he respected (and probably loved) fucked Griffith up.

Guts, for his part, failed to find meaning in his journey because he was so fixated on becoming the kind of man Griffith would respect, that he didn't realize that he already had everything he could want with Griffith, Casca and lots of war- I mean his other friends.

It's such a good tragedy.
