I don't understand why HOA exist.
You join them to let some people dictate your household?

The concept is just unfamiliar to me.

In theory, they help manage community amenities. You pay tour fees, and they upkeep public/shared spaces, pools, whatever. And their policies are meant to make sure the community's collective property value stays high, so they stop members from doing things that might bring down a neighbor's property value.

In practice, it's usually a bunch of rich, bored geezers cosplaying as politicians and getting anal retention about anyone's grass being a 16th of an inch too long, or leaving the trash can out an hour past collection time. And these bastards have the legal power to fine the hell out of you for whatever they decide is a "violation."
