Or if a war starts. It's very unlikely, but then there were people who signed up in just before 9/11 thinking they'd have an easy couple years of service in exchange for debt relief who then wound up going to war.

Happened to my friend in college. He signed up with the military in 2000 to get free dental school. In exchange he had to spend five years serving, part of which was in Afghanistan and part of which was in Iraq. He never went near the front lines but it was still pretty scary.

Anyway the point is that you never know. Even if the risk is small, it's not zero.
