What was his goal? To get elected.
Were his methods disgusting and evil? Yes.
Did they work? Yes.

One doesn't exclude the other.

How does every single topic in here where you basement dwellers get involved gets turned into a Trump debate. Noone fucking cares. It says a lot about your country that your last three presidential candidates were an evil woman that never answered for her cimes, an even more evil orange man who's a borderline degenerate and an 80 year old who's cognitive abilities are obviously on decline because of his age.
