For me, the argument as to which unit to use (inches / foot / yard) vs (millimeters / centimeters / meters) are all situational as to which one I prefer to use. I'm pretty flexible and will use what makes more sense for that thing I care about.

Generally speaking I do think that imperial is better here but I find for longer distances having a longer base unit like a mile make measurement easier.

Or to use a more extreme example, if I was measuring the distance between stars in space, I'd use light-years or parsecs. Not miles or kilometers.
