I don't like it either and neither does my wife, but I mean it's just one of a pile of issues. The inability to know how to read a word you've never seen before in kanji sucks a lot (yes you can guess, but especially for place names it won't help much). I remember my boss made a reservation at a restaurant and when I asked for the name he said he didn't know how to say it so he would text it to me. So we ate at this restaurant and neither of us knew how to actually say the name of the restaurant. My wife's mom basically refused to learn beyond survival Japanese because she hates all the readings for kanji.
