I don't know enough about the history of the telephone to make a judgement on it.

Photography is very interesting because a lot can be traced back to ideas of Thomas Wedgwood. He published a very widespread article on his findings in the early 1800s. However, to the best of our knowledge, he never made any long lasting photographs, and none are known to survive today.

Not much happened in advancing photography for a while until about 20-30 years later when a bunch of people started making what we consider to be actual photographs. There of course was a lot of sharing of ideas and this allowed for photography to rapidly advance.
