Damn, Berseria looks cool. What's the combat like for someone who's never played a Tales game? Is it better than Arise, which I have also not played?
Honestly, I think it's good as a first entry into the series. I think the reason I hated Berseria's combat so much is because of how drastically different it is to previous games. I wanted to play it in the same way as Symphonia and Vesperia and I just couldn't. So it will probably be more fun, without that expectation

The main thing to know about the combat system is that using attacks relies on your "Soul Gauge." You increase it by stunning enemies, inflicting status assignments, or perfect dodging. But enemies can also decrease your gauge by stunning you or inflicting status ailments on you.

So if you're not careful you can be in a position where you can't really attack much until you manage to land a stun/ailment, or you perfect dodge an attack to get your gauge back up. It can make some encounters feel slow and limiting. But it becomes less of a problem as you progress through the story and the max limit for the soul gauge goes up.
