I remember in an episode of The Mentalist, one of the suspects was caught on camera chaining his gay (later revealed to be trans-in-denial) son to a desk and both physically and verbally beating them. The characters remarked that once the media got hold of this footage there would be national outrage and the man would never find work again.

... Didn't age too well, did it? Much of the US at the moment would be lining up to offer him employment after seeing that.

Not the only thing that didn't age well though. As with all police procedurals, there was inevitably the episode where the killer was a cop and it was suggested that the system will "come down exceptionally hard on him" because police are held to a higher standard. Right, I'm sure...
