When stars go supernova (which isn't the only way they die, but is the only way that you'd see one get briefly brighter before disappearing altogether), the "flash" lasts for a few months from our perspective, in the form of the star getting brighter and holding that extra brightness before fading out relatively gradually. If it only lasted a couple seconds, it was most likely a meteor, especially given last night's meteor shower. Weird. I could see that for the ding star. But then, why didnt it move?
