I think this is Nintendo's decision to pursue a new creative direction for Mario. Charles Martinet was like a gleeful little kid any time he was in public; he never would have voluntarily retired from this role. That's what he shows to the public. Like what, you expect him to be a grumpy old man if he suddenly no longer wanted to voice Mario?
