I can say this only with the clarity of 4+ years of sobriety: these expensive beers in and of themselves were almost never worth it. Alcoholism + genuine appreciation for the beer really throws rational thinking out the window.

I had a little unofficial beer aficionados club and I think we all liked the thrill of the hunt and clout chasing from acquiring these special, sometimes seemingly sacred beers more than drinking them. There were a couple of legitimately mind blowing experiences though.

In the end, for me at least, it was all a really good front for an unhealthy alcohol obsession. <_<

Hey man, I hear ya!! But to me it's all about moderation. Sure, go for the big game, but at the end of the day you only down what you can afford. Anything beyond that and you're only fooling yourself.

And just to be fully auspicious, when i say it's only down to what you can afford, I don't mean from a monetary view.
