P3 is very much "stand of the week." Later parts incorporate the overarching plot more organically. If you don't enjoy it in Part 4, it's just not for you. Parts 7 and 8 detract from that "fight of the week" by having more happening to the characters outside of fighting. Part 7 is a huge race across the USA, part 8 is a weird mystery series. But those aren't animated, yet. Part 7 in particular is very well received, though it relies a lot on callbacks (that are done right). It's in an alternate universe, so you theoretically skip to it and just read the manga.
