I saw one article about the Direct saying that they don't think it's likely until after this holiday season, which I think makes sense. Announce a successor now (especially a backwards compatible one), and you're going to get people who were considering buying a Switch for Christmas holding out for the new system instead, as well as possibly missing out on some game sales. Announcing it early next year for a holiday 2024 release would likely be the best approach.

While I totally agree with you, it's interesting to observe that the Switch was announced in October and released in March. That being said, I don't think there was much hope for the Wii U to keep selling, so there are differing factors.
