So I'm going to step in before the entirety of CE makes a fool of themselves and I question why I even come here.

That statistic is not the "divorce rate". Divorce rate would be the percentage of marriages that end in divorce in general.

That number comes from a simple ratio, done in 2020 during peak COVID restrictions, for marriages and divorces. So basically how many divorces divided by how many marriages. As you probably expect, there weren't a whole lot of marriages during that year, with everyone postponing them because you were literally not allowed to have gatherings. Divorces, however, were fine and probably even increased due to the stresses of the pandemic and lockdown.

Not to mention a myriad of other factors that contribute to this number. Population age distribution in Portugal being older, younger people getting married less often even when living with someone, etc.

Fun fact, if there had been a couple less marriages and a couple more divorces, the stats could say the divorce percentage was 102% according to that methodology. Maybe that would be enough to snap people out of the idea that this number somehow means 94% of marriages end in divorce, which should be obvious to everyone, but alas.

yeah as soon as I saw it I was like "there has to be more to this"
