They left it out of the live action because it's unneeded(not to mention the controversy it would cause lol, but I think it's more because it's not needed) , it's not a core part of who his character is. It's as mentioned just one of the running gags in the show.You being a fan or being disgruntled people "misunderstand him" is quite irrelevant. The gag is part of his character in the anime/manga and for that reason some people don't like him. The running gag is not funny to everyone, and it most definitely is a big and very much core part of his character. So much that it has even at times influenced the story such as Fishman Island. ...
