That story about the dude who died from a heart attack is especially disgusting, b/c he was only in jail in the first place for a "child support violation", which shouldn't even fucking happen. Literally the only form of Debtor's Prison still oddly tolerated in America. The family court system murdered that man.

Cold turkey is how they die. Withdrawal deaths are common and prisons refuse to track them.
