LOL. First, you assume that because it didn't happen that Democrats didn't make the offer behind closed doors. If a handful of Republicans were willing to oust McCarthy for working with Democrats to keep the government open, then the vast majority would be willing to oust him for making such a deal with Democrats, which is likely why he refused to take such a deal. If the deal was all Democrats and only a couple of Republicans are working together to elect a speaker, then that Speaker should be a Democrat. We'll keep voting Jeffries and when they decide they want to get shit done, they can join us or get their act together.

McCarthy himself said he didn't go to the Dems to save his job and the Dems after Sunday were uniformly pissed off at him. He knew Dems were floating the idea because he addressed it to specifically say that's a no. Repubs would eat a bullet before they nominated a Dem for House Speaker, so Speaker Jefferies during a GOP controlled Congress is the least likely route. They would easily keep the government shutdown over risking the safety of their families becoming targets for MAGA domestic terrorists. Not to mention it gives them an excuse to not govern.
