It's called a hard magic system where magic works more like a science instead of actual magic. Personally I like soft magic systems better because of that. I want magic to be magic, not otherworldly science.

I can accept soft magic if they would explain HOW they do anything. I mean, in old DnD books the descriptions for many priest/cleric spells were ok, you're beseeching a god to do something

But wizards? What... do you just, like, THINK hard and it works?

To put it another way: If you were on the Holodeck playing as a wizard, how would the HOLODECK know what do to?
