29. Prey (Hulu)

The first good Predator movie in foreeeever, and it's one where they finally got it right.

Prey is about a Predator attacking a Native American tribe in the 1700's and one girl's struggle to defeat it.

Like honestly, that's the entire gist of this idea and that's all you need. Give me Predator. Give me humans trying to overcome him. Having it set in a different age? Oh hell yeah. That's all awesome. It shouldn't be more difficult than that to make these movies! Just keep doing exactly this! I'll watch every one!

But what makes it so awesome is that it takes the time to develop our protagonist. She's great. Love Amber Midthunder and her performance here was perfect. Not only that, they took the time to develop this 1700's plain they're on. Because it's foreign and it's our setting, and it feels just as important as the Predator and our protagonist.

Adding in some twists and turns here is good too, but for the most part this entire thing is simple. It doesn't get complicated. You know how it all is going to end up after the beginning of the movie, and it delivers.

This movie manages to be so creative without modern technology, and while the Predator doesn't have his wildly futuristic weapons, it still very much futuristic gimmicks, and it is a nightmare to behold. You watch it just tear through EVERYONE. Even making a dent on this thing is so much effort. They make the Predator every bit as vicious and badass as it needs to be. Positively love that portrayal.

Nothing feels unfair either about this girl with a bow and arrow trying to put in the work to take out the Predator either. Just a masterful, tight script here. Tremendous work, and major props to the director Dan Trachtenberg (notable for 10 Cloverfield Lane) for being able to make this movie such a delight to watch. This guy gets it. Put him in charge of more things.

But just give me more Predator movies like this. Not that garbage they shoveled at us in 2018. Just give us this! Big recommend for anyone wanting to see a good Predator film. This not being a major theatrical release is such a missed opportunity.
