41. Scream 3 (Max)

So I'll just come out and say it, and I think this is the general consensus: Scream 3 is the weakest movie in the franchise.

Scream 3 is about a Scream killer targeting the cast of Stab 3, the movie based on the events of the Scream movies, and the killer seems to have a connection with Sidney.

This movie felt like such a slog to watch again, and I actually kind of dreaded watching it because I just didn't like it that much. Which sucks because there are some STRONG moments in this movie and some pretty funny moments as well, but overall I was able to pinpoint why I dislike it so much.

Scream 3 just plays with the meta of all of the really awful tropes in slasher movies, which makes it ultimately too campy and frankly stupid. Like we're pulling stuff from Sidney's mom as a long lost connection? That sucks. We're getting goofy with a cast of characters identical to the Scream characters? Like it's all just too over the top for what this franchise is. It feels almost like a parody rather than meta commentary at this point. EXPLODING HOUSES? What are we doing with this series?

And as a result, the rest of the movie follows this tone and it just makes it feel so weak as a result. Scream 3 feels like something the Scream series would make fun of, and I hate that.

But it's still a Wes Craven Scream film, so it does have some really good bits. There's things to like in this movie a lot. The wit is there some of the time and really catches me. And I like a lot of the meta commentary on filming a slasher movie within a slasher movie. But it's everything else that drags this movie down to a crawl and it just really suffers as a result.

It feels like grading on a scale, but this movie is so disappointing. It should have been a lot more clever and interesting than it was, but I think they thought they were being more clever and interesting than they actually were with it.

It's crazy, because every other Scream movie, you can have a debate about the ranking in all movies in the series aside from the first being best, and this one being the worst. I could even hear a case for a couple other Scream movies being better than the first. But this one is just not good. And it's wild because I love every other movie in this franchise so much. But this one I just can't stand to watch because it's just not nearly as good as the rest.

Despite all my complaining though, as a stand alone movie, it's still pretty good. That's most of the praise I can give it though.
