Well, I had a hellacious day of work followed by fun at a haunted house. But I did end up finishing another.

45. Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (Max)

This is still HIS DAY, so another Jason movie! And good news! This one is actually probably the best one so far!

Part VI is about Tommy Jarvis wanting to destroy Jason's corpse in case he comes back. But indoingso, he accidentally resurrects him as a zombie revenant!

This movie fucking rules. I remember vividly the whole opening with Tommy jamming a spike into Jason's corpse, the lightning striking, and Jason coming back to life and being an unkillable monster who punches a hole through a man.

This is so much god damn fun. Like this is peak Jason Voorhees for me. This movie takes the entire concept and finally gives us more depth to the character. Jason now feels more rounded somehow, instead of generic slasher machete man. He's an actual monster and he kind of interacts with people instead of shambling mindlessly.

What stands out are little things. Jason reacting to situations that are seemingly nothing. Just canting his head in confusion when they attempt to stop him, seeming annoyed at certain actions. Standing triumphantly over fucking burning trucks. Like he just feels like he leveled up in terms of actually giving him the slightest bit of personality now, and it feels like a characterization that sticks.

This movie gives us action, good comedy that I actually laughed at, an actually interesting story of Tommy obsessed with stopping Jason and his nightmares, seeing the effects Jason had on this city, and taking a tone that's more about having fun rather than giving us outright scares. And honestly? I like that tone a lot.

Having Jason being a lot stronger now helps too, I think. He seems like more of a menacing force now. Encounters seem more interesting. Stakes are raised with every attempt to beat him.

Everything just works with Part VI. And it's really shocking, given the shakeup they gave Jason. I just really appreciate how they managed to get more bold with this creative choice after what an uninteresting dud the last movie was. I just wish the quality had stayed like this through the whole franchise, because I remember it slowly starts going down from here.

Anyway, Part VI. Best Friday the 13th movie. If you watch one, make it this one.

Rating: 8.5/10
