God damn you take some expensive vacations. Must be some rich people packages. I spent 2 weeks in Vietnam and everything including flight, hotel, and food came to $2k.
Thats the thing- we dont do packages. Everything is planned and private for us.

On our trip to Japan, for example, we got first class JR Passes (because we went during peak cherry blossom season and we didnt want to get the economy JR Passes since they are first come/first serve), and we hired private tour guides to meet us at the hotel and guide us around for each of our destinations. It was beautiful, amazing, and extremely educative on the Shintoism and their religious culture (we even slept at a temple, where they had curfews and strict co-ed rules to the point my wife and I couldnt even sleep in the same building!). Our main stops were-
Hiroshima, Miyajima, Himeji, Koyosan, Kyoto, Nara, Nikko, and Tokyo.

But our first international trip to Greece, we were running cheapo and we did two things- rented a car and drove all around Greece for a week+ (Corinth, Nemea, Mycenae, Nafplio, Epidarus, Olympia, Patras, Delphi, Meteroa, Thermopylae), and a three day bus tour of Athens and surrounding area. The latter sucked and is sort of erased from my memory since we were stuck with like 50 people and could barely hear the tour guide, whereas the former, even though we had no tour guides, is vividly fresh in my memory because it was so wild that we did all that (driving like a thousand miles in a little over a week in a foreign country, just to sightsee).
