Mine has a separate container for the buckwheat ,inside the pillow case it came with, so I wash that and the pillow cover.

But yeah it's definitely something you replace over time, since it compresses too much eventually. I think you could just buy buckwheat and refill/replace as an option.

Mine had a similar setup. I got like 7-8 years out of it. I was looking to just buy another one but the place I got it from was gone and sourcing it otherwise was more time than I wanted to wait. I probably should have bought a replacement well before the old one was shot.
