On Reddit, the upvote system discourages people from saying anything even slightly controversial and encourages them to do whatever will get them the most likes. Posts and comments being ranked by the most upvoted by default makes it worse. The system is good for getting answers to questions since the highest voted posts (usually) have the best answers, but for anything else it's more of a hindrance. --- Resident Synthwave enjoyer.
