That sounds like he wanted to go out on his own terms, but didnt want to go alone, so like a complete coward he attempted to take everybody else on the flight along with him.

Its actually a recurring problem with airline pilots, as several infamous airline crashes are thought to have been caused by the pilot being in a particularly low point in their life and thinking it would be easier simply to end their suffering once and for all.

Im sure glad the on-duty flight crew prevented him from doing that by the way, and I hope they give him the help he needs while hes cooling his heels behind bars.
