It's super fucked up and most Jewish groups have abandoned or have banned inquiring mamzer status. Yeah. Ultra-Orthodox Jews are a minority among Jews and not even all Ultra-Orthodox Jews go anywhere near this hardcore on things like this. Still things like this where people hatch complex plots to comply on a technical level if not in spirit are often a wierd mix of severql out of tragic, funny, interesting, baffling and horrifying. It reminds me of the people who pay huge fines in pennies, maliciously comply with orders/regulations at a job or pull of insane legal looplholes in court albeit more violent in this case.
