Or, and this is the more likely thing, people conflate him saying "Welcome to Earth" with his next comments where he has the cigar in his mouth and says "now that's what I call a close encounter". Had he said "welcome to earth" with the cigar in his mouth he likely would have pronounced it "earf". --- Last night I was lying in bed, staring at the stars, and I wondered...
