Because the company I work for actually takes care of their employees. My former job, it's rare for retail to get unionized.

This. And more importantly take care of performers even more.

My little brother worked retail (Meijers, midwest grocery chain) night shift stocking and they were unionized (UAW for some reason). He was young and gung ho, threw up two-three aisles per night for less than minimum wage after you took his union dues out. Another 70 year old dude struggled to handle only the coffee 1/2 aisle in a shift but had been there for so long he made $30+/hr.

That's the only gripe I have with unions - the best CANNOT climb and the worst CANNOT be fired/pay cut. Negotiate safety like the old days, but these unwavering locked in pay scales are utterly nonsense.
