Sure he makes some call backs to old testament stuff in there, but even then there's still some radical takes on it if you take the times into account, such as the bit about loving your enemies and whatnot. I mean there was a reason he was hated. He went against a lot of stuff that was taught.

How are you gonna interpret this any other way?

Anyway, I'm tired so I'll just leave this here. Steve Wells, author of the The Skeptic's Annotated Bible and Drunk with Blood: God's Killings in the Bible (spoilers: it's around 25 million) lists 50 reasons (with verses cited) for why you should be ashamed and not a fan of the character.
