I cannot recall any discussion about abortion here in Australia for quite a long while. It is legal to freely, as in no questions asked, have one here in most states up to 22 - 24 weeks, except Tasmania which is 16 weeks. After that period one must have the consent of 2 medical practitioners to proceed.

There is no obligation for the woman to inform anyone of the procedure either, whether it be a wife to her husband, girlfriend to her partner or a minor to her parents. Oh, and no court is allowed to grant an injunction to stop the abortion, even if the person seeking the injunction is the paternal father.

There are no waiting periods for the procedure, and it is partially funded by the federal government via Medicare.

In fact it is illegal for anti-abortion activists to harrass visitors or staff of clinics that offer abortion.

Opinion polls conducted since the 1980's show the majority of Australians support abortion rights, and that support is seemingly increasing.
