They didn't have to use the Gorr the God Butcher story. They could have used any Thor story or made up something. I have no idea why they picked THAT story and then "have fun on set" with it This is pretty much usual for the mcu, they only care for the characters and usually trample over the canon and do whatever the fuck they want with it.
