I guess it's to give their eyes a clear boundary as to how far they can look in a certain direction, but it still just looks odd. Especially since the overwhelming majority of game protagonists don't wear glasses. I think it would look better if the little connecting line in the middle was removed, giving them regular expressive eyes. Even then, I always had a preference for dot eyes.
