The Hokies reach the endzone on the game's opening drive, going 80 yards in 11 plays, then add on a field goal after forcing Lafayette to punt, 10-0 VT after 1. Lafayette gets a little farther on their next drive, just getting into Tech territory before punting, but after forcing a VT 3 & out, they get on the board with a 45-yard field goal, 10-3. The Hokies appear to separate themselves just before half, with a 4-yard Kyron Drones TD pass to Da'Quan Felton to cap off a 65-yard drive, but Lafayette quarterback Dean DeNobile hits Chris Carasia for an 80-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage in the 2nd half, 17-10. Both offenses go completely lifeless from there, until Lafayette RB Jamar Curtis busts out for a 15-yard touchdown run to tie the game late in the 4th quarter and force overtime. Lafayette starts with the ball in the extra session - they go a whole zero yards in 3 plays and kick a 42-yard field goal. Virginia Tech picks up a first down, but then faces a 3rd & 10 from the 11 after 2 incompletions.
