I read a great article / theory once upon a time that the reason conservative Christians are so opposed to more progressive views of science that serve only to protect mankind and secure a better future is that every single generation of such Christians have had myriad predictions about the second coming of Christ and the apocalypse, so they just don't give a shit. Which is equally hilarious because Jesus himself says in the Bible that no one will predict his second coming. So by their own beliefs they're automatically wrong.
