There doesn't seem to be a need to complicate it by using A while selecting one. All it does is slow down pacing when you need to use the armor or beam upgrades. I haven't gotten the fourth power yet, so maybe it justifies this? I mean, then you have the A button freed up to switch between beams instead of needing to move your thumb onto the touchpad (Or a dedicated morphball button, but I've gotten pretty used to tapping so it's no big deal).
