The Wild beat writer (who is very very good and easily the best sports writer I've followed in my short time) was recently hired by the Athletic and quit his longtime newspaper gig because of it. I was going to try out a subscription, but I didn't and now that the season has started, I won't get a subscription because it feels like nothing has changed. He still tweets and stuff, but I don't need to pay for a long article about how the Staal brothers were raised.

I do think it's a good direction for sports journalism tho.

I'm too casual to pay for a subscription, though.

It's likely worth it, mind you.

same, and I agree. I might do the free trial within the next month or two

I haven't read anything on that site in part because I feel like it's about to go under any second now. It just feels like something that's going to be profiled as a noble failure by deadspin in 15 months.

I wondered the same thing...how could it get profit? A couple months after he was hired, the wild writer (Michael Russo) tweeted that something like 50k people subscribed to the Athletic in the Twin Cities market. If they all paid $30 for the year, that's 1.5 mil. And that's just for the Wild. If they can do that in other markets, I can see how they have enough money to hire the best writers and stay in business
