Let the tip fit the service. Was the service nonexistent? No. Therefore the tip should not be nonexistent. The service was shitty but existent, ergo that's what your tip should be.

if tips don't make their pay equal minimum wage where I live the employer has to cough up the difference.


That's different then. If that's true then what you did is excusable.

Personally, though, I would leave something like a penny because that's more insulting than no tip.


I probably would have had I thought about/had a penny. i was really close to getting up and going behind their station to get my own drink though. but the people I was with decided it was time to leave right as I was getting to that point. same place when I was much younger my mom had actually done that before so I knew exactly where the machine was if nothing had changed.
